Iranian, Sri Lankan FMs discuss issues of mutual interest

Colombo, IRNA — Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has met with his Sri Lankan counterpart Ali Sabry to discuss the expansion of bilateral relations.

Amirabdollahian, who is on an official visit to Sri Lanka, met Sabry on Tuesday.

He expressed hope that his visit would help elevate bilateral relations between Iran and Sri Lanka in all areas, including political, economic, and tourism sectors.

Amirabdollahian also thanked Sri Lanka for extending an official invitation to Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to visit the South Asian country and said he hoped the trip would be scheduled at a suitable time.

Iran’s top diplomat also appreciated Sri Lanka’s support for the Palestinian cause in international forums, including at the United Nations.

Sabry, for his part, said his country and the Islamic Republic share many common values and have good relations.

He noted that Sri Lanka has transited from the previous economic challenges and is now on the path towards economic growth and prosperity.

Praising Iran’s immense industrial and economic potential, Sabry said his country is ready to contract economic projects to Tehran.

The two diplomats also discussed ways to promote tourism ties and exchange of travelers, while stressing the need for the establishment of direct flights between Iran and Sri Lanka.

Amirabdollahian arrived on the Indian Ocean island on Monday.

As part of his trip, he is scheduled to meet Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
